Officially-safeguarded aerodromes are specified certificated and licensed aerodromes which are afforded safeguarding protection by UK Government (Department for Transport) to ensure their operation and development are not inhibited by proposed buildings, structures or constructions which might infringe the established obstacle limitation surfaces (OLS), or obscure runway approach lights or have the potential to impair the performance of aerodrome navigation aids, radio aids or telecommunication systems.
Operators of licensed aerodromes which are not officially safeguarded, and operators of unlicensed aerodromes and sites for other aviation activities (for example gliding or parachuting) should take steps to protect their locations from the effects of possible adverse development by establishing an agreed consultation procedure between themselves and the local planning authority or authorities.
- 10/15km radius area for general safeguarding with a 13km (8 Miles) radius a bird hazard
- 30km for wind farms
- 6km crane activity (changing in 2022)
- 3km for telecommunications masts (moving towards 7km for 5G)
- 10nM (18.5km) or 30nM (55.5km) for Instrument Flight procedures (from 31 Dec 2023)
Safeguarding Maps
Safeguarding maps are produced and submitted to LPAs affected by these safeguarded zones.
The airport will agree a consultation process with the LPA and review it regularly.
